The J1C test
determines the fracture toughness of ductile metallic materials in
accordance with international Standards. The test is performed on ductile
materials.
The test consists
of growing a crack within a specimen of a defined geometry which has had a
sharp defect or fatigue precrack introduced into
it.
The most common
specimen geometries used are the stepped notch compact tension (CT) and 3
point bend specimens. Of these, the CT specimen is the more popular due to
its economical use of material and simplicity of tooling.
Specimens are made
to specified proportions with recommended sizes; a minimum thickness is
required depending on the material.
